Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences passed the audit

Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences passed the audit

The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council has conducted an audit of Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences and has awarded the institution with a quality label that is valid for six years from 21 February 2013. The quality system of Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences fulfils the national criteria set for the quality management of higher education institutions, and the system corresponds to the European quality assurance principles and recommendations for higher education institutions.

The object of the audit was the quality system that Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences has developed based on its own needs and goals. The freely selected audit target chosen by the institution was lifelong learning. The following were regarded as key strengths of the quality system:

The quality system supports the management of the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences very well. Management systematically uses the data generated by the quality system in its steering and strategic decision-making procedures.

A good case of how well the quality system works in practice is the way in which all staff members take care of the students from the beginning of their studies all the way to graduation. The principle of taking care of students has a crucial impact on the wellbeing of students, and consequently on the educational results.

There is an open and interactive quality culture in the University of Applied Sciences. All members of the University participate actively in activities related to quality.

Among others, the following recommendations were given to Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences:

Various activities have accumulated in the quality system over the years and some of them are overlapping. The extensive documentation generated by the quality system should be streamlined and existing documentation be made lighter.

Quality management practices have been harmonised since the previous audit. The practices and documentation procedures should be further enhanced to ensure that all units operate on the same quality system principles.

The relations between the University of Applied Sciences and regional actors are trustful and open. To further promote this, a systematic and transparent management system for partnerships is recommended, and stakeholder inquiries should be carried out more systematically than at present.

Katja Kyllönen is the alumna of the year

Katja Kyllönen has been chosen as the alumna of the year at Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences. Kyllönen graduated from the Savonniemi campus in 2009 and has completed the degree programme in nursing. She has been a frequent visitor at her former university since her graduation and has been telling about her work to the current students.

The bases of her getting chosen are Kyllönen’s active and exemplary pursuits during her education and post-education in the duties of nursing. She has promoted the cooperation between the university and work life in many ways. The thesis by Kyllönen about kangaroo care is utilised both in education and training as well as in counselling at the children’s ward.

- Kyllönen has visited our classes several times after her graduation and, amongst other things, demonstrated the use of slings and cloth diapers on babies. She has given a very positive and encouraging image of both our school and her occupation, says the lecturer Tuula Okkonen from Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences.

Katja Kyllönen works at present at the Savonlinna central hospital in the department of children’s disease, gynaecological disease and breast surgery. In addition she’s participating in several associations and voluntary work such as the Allergy and Asthma Federation. She is the vice president of the local organisation and an allergy counsellor in her area. Kyllönen has also organised a baby bonnet knitting campaign for the new-borns in the maternity ward, for example.

- By telling about her versatile actions she has created faith in the first year students for the fact how important networks and participating in different initiatives already during the education are, mentions Okkonen.

The Alumnus of the Year award was handed to Katja Kyllönen at the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences’ Savonniemi campus at the graduation party on Friday.

The Alumnus of the Year was now chosen for the second time. The choice was made by Heikki Saastamoinen, the rector of the Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences, based on the propositions of the degree programmes. Last year Ville Asikainen, Bachelor of Business Administration, was rewarded as the Alumnus of the Year.

MUAS students gained success in an international CCNA NetRiders competition

Information Technology program's student Olga Kushanova has gained second position in Finnish category. Evgeniia Gromyko and Evgeny Malygin from the same program got third and fourth positions. All three got to the next round to represent Finland in an EMEA International NetRiders on July. International NetRiders competitions provide students with hands-on practice and experience in a competitive environment, a chance to test their skills and recognize their weaknesses, showcase their knowledge, and create interactive networking skills as well as new friendships across the world.

Cisco Systems, Inc. is an American multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and sells networking equipment. The CCNA NetRiders competition is related to the Cisco CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) education offered in MAMK. CCNA education validates the ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size routed and switched networks, including implementation and verification of connections to remote sites in a WAN.
